Trigger Point Dry Needling

A myofascial trigger point is defined as “a hyper-irritable spot in skeletal muscle that is often associated with a palpable nodule in a taut band of muscle.  The spot is tender when pressed, and can give rise to characteristic patterns of referred pain, motor dysfunction and autonomic phenomena…” Trigger Point Dry Needling (TDN) involves placing a small gauge acupuncture needle into the muscle at a trigger point, causing the muscle to contract until it fatigues.  This allows the muscle to relax, improving the flexibility of the muscle or tissue and therefore decreasing the symptoms. Physical Therapy is an optimal setting for use of TIMG_1119DN, as myofascial pain is present in many musculoskeletal conditions.  Appropriate patient populations or diagnoses may include:

  • Rotator cuff tendinitis
  • Tennis or golfer’s elbow
  • Patellar tendinitis
  • IT Band syndrome
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • TMD (temporomandibular joint dysfunction)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • TOS (thoracic outlet syndrome)
  • Adherent scar tissue

It is also commonly used to treat spinal conditions such as:

  • Piriformis syndrome
  • Sciatica
  • Headaches
  • Back and neck pain

TDN decreases the time spent on soft tissue mobilization, which allows increased time for additional treatment techniques during a patient’s visit.  Corrective exercises are a feature of TDN and are prescribed, along with extensive education, following the intervention to encourage active patient participation and self-management.
